It's the World's oldest railway (built in 1725) and luckily for us it's right on our doorstep. Tanfield Railway has the feeling that you are stepping back in time, just as soon as you leave the car park and peek over the bridge. And it's not just the sights - it's the smell! Burning coal and engine oil - mmm, my favourites! The waggonway itself is only a few miles long but a day ticket gives you unlimited travel. And that is what we did, stopping off at the Causey Arch (the oldest single span bridge in the World!) to take in the dramatic view and watch them turning the engine around. We relaxed back in our carriage, taking in the views over fields with not a soul in sight. Back at Andrews House Station we grabbed a cuppa and a bag of crisps (don't expect lunch) before exploring the incredible sights of the Marley Hill Engine Shed (is it indeed also the World's oldest engine shed?!), where spare parts and repair equipment abound and out the back is a wide range of rolling stock that waits patiently in the hope of repair and rejuvenation.
