With the grass still dewy, and the thick fog momentarily lifting, Mount Grace Priory was a sight for sore eyes. Travelling with friends and family, we were having a late morning stop-off on our way to an event. We'd brought a picnic and so spread out on a bench near the two storey Monk's Cell, which we had just explored and found to be surprisingly grand, having a bed, two desks, a spinning wheel, a loom and plentiful garden space. As there were no audio guides, the kids then started making their own, filming each other in different locations, much to our amusement. A hole in the wall of the cloisters also provided fun as they braved spider's webs to crawl through to the other side.
As it was November, we were surprised to be bathed in sunshine, but we didn't sit long, as we finished exploring the ruins and went on to the gardens and lake. A bit boggy, walking boots had been a good plan! We were disappointed not to be able to show our friends the attic space in the house that shares the site, as it was closed the day we visited. We remembered that more recent history was on offer up there, as it was used for visiting children's rooms when the house was last occupied. Back through the house, we admired the Arts and Crafts living room, before exiting via the gift shop and heading onwards on our travels.
